Australian businessman Richard McShane is a self-confessed “Kickstarter stalker” who is constantly searching for innovative projects.

When he stumbled across the Just Be Cool T-shirt campaign online it immediately caught his attention. He took out his credit card and ordered his T-shirt right away.

Messages of tolerance are often diluted or sabotaged by those who spread those messages because of their ideology or political persuasion. To effectively frame the argument for tolerance, the message needs to be simple and universal.

“This is what resonated with me about the Just Be Cool campaign and message,” Richard said in a recent email. “It is simple, irrefutable and all encompassing….

“Just be cool, OK!! Don’t be a sexist, don’t be a racist, just be cool.”

Richard said he sees examples of intolerance daily and knows he is not immune to holding biases.

“But every day I try to hold myself accountable for these biases and develop my tolerance for people whose background doesn’t accord with my own,” Richard said. “I can happily say I’m a work in progress.”

Most of our Just Be Cool campaign Kickstarter backers received their shirts in mid-August, but Richard was still waiting for his in late September. So we sent him another one.

While he waited for his newest wardrobe addition to travel the 9,600 miles from Florida to Australia, he told us he had plans to wear it proudly.

“I am really looking forward to wearing my Tee Shirt to work and people can see how simple the message can be along with how simple it is to live up to.”
